Litz River Walkabout in the community of Schruns. Start: Schruns Railway Station in the direction of Silbertal (200m), over the Litz River Bridge towards Bartholomaeberg (300m), take the path to Kaltenbrunnen, along the Ill and back to the centre of Schruns.   »

Shruns railway station. The starting point for the Village walkabout Schruns-Tschagguns. The Montafon Railway started operating in 1905 and was the only electric railway in the empire at that time. The railway between Bludenz and Schruns is the backbone of public transportation in the fore-Montafon and is one of the most modern privately owned railways in Austria.   »

The Batlogg Monument in honour of the freedom fighter from Montafon, Johann Josef Batlogg. The mayor, judge and defender of his country was born in Vandans on October 11th, 1751.   »

The Litz Chapel, built in 1688 is a landmark in Schruns. The sculptors on the altar were made by Melchior Lechleitner, an important stone mason who lived in the second half of the 17th century.   »

Schruns, the capital city of Montafon lies in a large valley inlet. The author and Nobel Prize winner, Ernest Hemingway spent a number of weeks here in 1925 and 1926. He wrote about his experiences in his work "The Snows of Kilimanjaro". Schruns has been touristically united with its neighbour Tschagguns since 2003. Together, they have a population of 6,500 with just as many guest beds.   »

The Gauenstein Cloister is one of the most beautiful Capuchin dwellings in Vorarlberg. Since the beginning of the 18th century, this place has been used as a hermitage with one or two Forest Brothers living in it. The church was consecrated in honour of the holy mother of God, Mary, by the Bishop of Chur on July 25th, 1721.   »

We are now in the Gaueser Forest. If you look over to the red sign that says "Vorsicht Abgrund" which means - Attention! Abyss - your will see a very special stone. It is a veined star by the name of "Sun Stone". This stone was probably used as an astronomical observation centre at night and as a sun dial during the day.   »

If you go to your left you will come to the viewpoint called "Landschrofen". There is a beautiful view of Tschagguns and Gantschier. The forested hill in front of you is called "Kresta" and it has a very interesting nature trail on it. Behind the hill is the Latschauer Reservoir. The so-called Aqua Hiking Trail runs from Latschau to Bitschweil.   »

Municipality of Gantschier. The border between the communities of Schruns and Bartholomaeberg is right in the middle. Anita Wachter, the former Olympic ski champion comes from here.   »

You can catch the Montafon train back to Schruns from here or you can follow the trail to the left along the Ill River through Tschagguns and back to Schruns.   »

This water reservoir was built by the Vorarlberg Ill power plant. They also erected stairs for the fish in Schruns-Rodund in 2004. This allows fish and other small animals that live in the water to get upstream. The Ill is a tributary of the Rhine River and is 75 km. long. It flows into the Rhine north of Feldkirch.   »

View of the pilgrimage church Tschagguns. On the left the vicarage and above it the Tschagguns Mittagspitze. Tschagguns was officially made an independent parish in 1431. Documents mention a church as early as 1339.   »

The Litz dam was built in 1912 under the supervision of the master builder Alois Negrelli. Later, Negrelli was the technical director of the Suez Canal enterprise. The source of the Litz is in the back of the Silbertal on the border to Tyrol.   »

Movies were shown in the gymnasium, which was later to be the Batlogg Hall. There are abstract frescoes at the entrance by Hannes Bertle. Batlogg Hall has been home to the Culture Stage since 2006.   »
