The Bergknappenweg or Miner’s Path is a hiking trail that begins at the mountain station, Kristbergbahn.  During the hike you will be able to gain insight into the miners’ lives.  Mining was of great economic importance to the Montafon in the middle ages.  The name, Silbertal or Silver Valley bears witness to the times when this valuable mineral was mined in the region.  The trail is suited for families with the length of the hike being about two and a half hours.  Besides mining, while you are on the trail, you will also be provided with information about the cultural landscape of the region as well as having points of interest in the mountains and the surrounding valleys brought to your attention.

When you leave the mountain station you follow the signs in the direction of Muttjöchle and Bergknappenweg.  After about 300 metres, the path branches off to the left into a wood.  You will see signs of mining on the trail.  After a while you will reach the Kristbergsattel or Christ Mountain saddle, with a view of the Kloster Valley, the Forest School, the high moor and other points of interest.  You go on through the plot of land called Winkel and receive information about avalanche safety constructions, the May fields and the wet moors.  At the end of the tour you arrive at the Miner’s Chapel (Bergknappenkapelle) where you are once again taken back to the Middle Ages.

Before you start your tour, though, enjoy the view from the mountain station in the mountains of the Montafon.  We wish you a relaxing and educational hike!
