Miners Chapel St. Agatha

by Frießnegger Harald last modified 2007-03-22 15:38

St. Agatha’s church on the Kristberg is the oldest standing church in the Montafon.  It was built at the beginning of the 15th century and owes its construction to mining.

Miners built the church and it is said that not far from where it stands there was a tunnel or a shaft that caved in one day.  The miners didn’t think that were going to be rescued and as usually happens when people are in extreme situations, they started to pray and make promises to God that if they were rescued, they would build a chapel or a church on the spot.

The miners on the outside saw what had happened and started the rescue operations immediately.  The miners were saved and they kept their promise.  The way they kept their promise is said to be one of the best things they ever did and this is why we honour them with our thoughts.
