On the Ganeu

by Theresa König last modified 2007-11-07 11:59

A greedy old man owned a May Field on Ganeu.  In the spring he fed his cattle and made butter and cheese.  Instead of going to church in Vandans every Sunday he would sit at home, fixing his shoes and mending his clothes while everyone else was at mass.  One day the old man died.  The next spring his daughter had to go to the May Field to look after the animals.  One Sunday the girl first went to mass and then she went to Ganeu.  When she got to the house she could hear hammering and she wondered who could be in the house.  With a pounding heart and shaking hands she opened the door very quietly and went into the kitchen.  “Lord, Jesus!” she said.  “What are you doing here?”  The old man answered: “I was foolish and never went to mass.  Now I have to sit here every Sunday and fix my shoes while mass is being read.  If you have 3 masses read for me, I will be saved.”  And with that the ghost disappeared.  The young girl had 3 masses read for her father and he never came back to haunt her again.
