Ziegerberg - Mount Zieger

Ziegerberg (Mount Zieger)

A few meters after the bridge that crosses the Rasafei Brook, there is a canyon path on the left that leads to the village centre.  However, you must be wearing non-slip foot wear to take it.  We will take the scenic route through the meadows and the woods towards the Ziegerberg where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Schruns-Tschagguns basin.  We go on, crossing the “Grabs” chairlift line, which was the first finished chairlift in Austria in 1947.  Starting from Tschagguns, we are surrounded by the districts of Alpila-Alpe, Tilisuna and Sulzfluh.  It’s about a 40 minute walk from here to the paved Ziegerberg Street.  Walking towards the valley, the Tilisuna Path turns off to the right and 200 meters after that the Bad Path turns off to the left towards Bitschweil.  The name of the path reminds us of an old bath house that used to be just below it in which healing waters from the sulphur spring were brought.  It was here that people searching for a cure from their ailments would lie in wooden troughs filled with brimstone water, hoping for relief from their suffering.  A bowling alley and a dance arbour attached to the bath house lead us to believe that this must have also been a place for merriment.  The bath house was torn down around the turn of the century.
