The Mill

The miller didn’t receive any money for milling, but for every 10 kg of grain that he milled, he was allowed to keep 1kg for himself.  This was his wage.  In those days the only grains that they knew were wheat and barley, and Mülli Ferdi says that the best wheat came from the May field called Vollspora in the Gauer Valley.  The people there were very efficient and exact when it came to weeding.  Keep in mind that the wheat fields were planted at an altitude of 1,200 meters.  If there was a bad harvest, due to a bad summer, it meant hunger, poverty and an accumulation of debt for the people there.  Around 1926 the mill was no longer profitable because the people had money to buy flour.  In the end, the mill was demolished.
