Lake Luener

You are standing in front of Lake Luener, at the end of the Brandner Valley – which in turn is a side valley of the Walgau.  The lake is situated at the foot of the highest mountain in the Raetikon mountains, the “Schesaplana” at an altitude of 1,970 meters.  Lake Luener is one of the largest natural mountain lakes in the Alps.  Interim finds at the bottom of the lake show that there were warm periods and that the forest border was much higher than it now is.  These finds can be viewed in the visitors’ room at the Lake Luener plant in Latschau.  The first time the Luener lake reservoir was filled completely was in 1959.  The Lake Luener plant, with a capacity of 232,000 kw, uses the 974 meter high downward gradient over an approximately 10 km long tunnel and pipe system between Lake Luener and Latschau.
